With the weather warming up, our latest blog has all the spring ready gardening and lawn tips and tricks to get your garden in the groove for growth season.
Spring is almost upon us! Ok… we might be jumping the gun a little but before you know it, the weather will start to turn.
To avoid getting caught out, it’s important to make sure you are properly prepared for a brand-new growing season. To help you get organised, we’ve compiled a handy list of our top five tips for getting prepared come Springtime.
The gardening tools are going to be getting a lot more use as the weather starts warming up, so now is the perfect time to give them a little TLC.
Be sure to give your tools a good checking over to assess any issues or damage. Remember, if you give your tools some love, they’ll love you back – and so will your plants.
Start by using steel wool and sanding off any rust and dust that may have built up on the blades and use a sharpening stone to restore the blade edge. Finish off by applying some WD40 or vegetable oil to prevent rust.
Now’s the time to sharpen or replace blunt mower blades. Sharp blades will help your lawn look great and stay healthy. Blunt ones, on the other hand, pull at your grass blades promoting fungal growth and other diseases, leaving your lawn looking brown and dry. If you’re running petrol-powered gardening gear, be sure to check the spark plugs and top up the oil.
Now is the prime time to prune your fruit trees, roses, or any ornamental flowers in the garden. When the main flowering or fruiting period is over, a good prune gives them plenty of time to recover and grow their next lot of flowers or foliage, ensuring stronger growth in spring and summer.
It’s also a good time to give your hedges a trim as they are less susceptible to stress which comes with the high temperatures of spring and summer. After a pruning session, give your plants a boost by applying Roots, Shoots and Leaves Granular Fertiliser which will help newly trimmed plants fight off disease and improve soil health and moisture retention for better root growth and stronger, healthier plants going into Spring.
During the colder months, soil retains moisture which makes weeds easier to pull out as opposed to hard, dry summer soil, so there’s no better time than now to tackle pesky weeds.
Getting on top of the weed situation now, before weeds go to seed, means they’ll also be less weeding to be done in the coming months. That leaves you with more time to enjoy the more joyous aspects of gardening, or just kick back with a cold one - both are good options!
After getting on top of the weeds, replenish your garden beds with some nourishing mulch. Adding a thick layer over your garden beds will help keep weeds to a minimum and will help retain soil moisture as the temperature warms up.
Make sure you don’t mulch right up to the stems and trunks. Not only does this prevent the stems and trunks from developing rot, but it also provides a space to apply Roots, Shoots and Leaves Granular Fertiliser in the Spring.
To begin, start by removing any veggies that haven’t survived the winter and rake off the mulch layer. Add 1-2 inches of fresh compost and any supplementary nutrients that may be required.
At this time of year, most soil types also benefit from an application of Seaweed Secrets, Stimulizer and Fulvic Acid. After adding the amendments, mix them together with the compost and then rake the beds smooth. Finally, to ensure your soil is in tip-top shape for Spring, it’s worth considering a soil test.
